Artemin also known as ART or ARTN is a neurotrophic factor and part of the glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) family. It comprises a mature peptide with a molecular mass of approximately 24 kDa. This protein expresses highly in the peripheral and central nervous system particularly in developing and injured tissues. Artemin supports the survival and differentiation of specific neurons contributing to neurite outgrowth and neuronal regeneration.
Biological function summary
Artemin is a significant modulator of neuronal survival and neurite extension. It forms a signaling complex with its receptor components the GDNF family receptor alpha 3 (GFRα3) and the receptor tyrosine kinase (RET).
