START domain containing 7 (STARD7) also known as StAR-related lipid transfer protein 7 is a protein involved in lipid transfer and metabolism. It is approximately 37 kDa in mass. STARD7 facilitates the movement of phospholipids between membranes playing a role in maintaining cellular lipid balance. The protein is broadly expressed in various tissues including liver kidney and the gastrointestinal tract indicating its widespread functional importance in the body.
Biological function summary
The lipid transport function of STARD7 contributes to maintaining membrane integrity and cellular homeostasis. It is involved in intracellular lipid signaling pathways impacting diverse cellular processes. STARD7 does not form a part of large protein complexes but functions alongside other lipid transfer proteins helping to regulate levels of important lipids in the cell. Its activity impacts cellular processes that rely on dynamic membrane composition and signaling lipid availability.
Pathways
STARD7 participates in the lipid signaling and transport pathways. It acts within the phosphatidylcholine transfer pathway cooperating with phosphatidylcholine transfer proteins. This activity links STARD7 closely with lipid metabolism pathways and phospholipid transfer cycles that are central to cellular energy homeostasis and membrane dynamics. These pathways often connect with broader metabolic processes influenced by related proteins such as STARD5.
Dysfunction of STARD7 associates with metabolic syndromes and gastrointestinal diseases. Altered lipid transfer due to problems in STARD7 expression or function has implications in obesity-related metabolic disruption. It is also linked to inflammatory bowel diseases where lipid homeostasis plays a part in intestinal inflammation and immune responses. In these conditions STARD7 interacts with proteins involved in lipid metabolism and inflammatory signaling such as LXR receptors which further influence disease progression and patient outcomes.
