LSDP5 also known as PLIN5 or Perilipin 5 is a protein that plays an important role in lipid droplet formation and regulation. Its molecular mass is approximately 52 kDa. This protein is mainly expressed in tissues with high lipid metabolism such as muscle and liver. LSDP5 localizes to the surface of lipid droplets where it regulates triglyceride storage and release connecting to various metabolic processes.
Biological function summary
The protein contributes to the organization of lipid droplets and regulation of lipid storage in the cell. It is not typically part of a large protein complex. By modulating lipid droplet formation LSDP5 controls the flow of fatty acids in and out of these storage organelles.
