RECA1 also known as Recombinase A1 is a protein with a molecular mass of approximately 37 kDa. This protein performs an important role in DNA repair and homologous recombination. RECA1 operates by promoting the alignment of homologous DNA strands and facilitating the exchange of DNA strands. It is expressed in various tissues with higher levels observed in actively dividing cells where DNA repair is critical. Its activity is important for maintaining genomic integrity and ensuring proper cell division.
Biological function summary
RECA1 supports cellular DNA repair mechanisms addressing damaged DNA and preventing mutations from propagating. As part of the homologous recombination complex it assists in precise DNA repair by enabling the search for homology and strand pairing. This function enables cells to accurately repair double-strand breaks which are a severe form of DNA damage. This activity is essential for cell survival and avoiding chromosomal aberrations.
Pathways
RECA1 integrates into key molecular pathways involved in DNA damage response and repair such as the homologous recombination pathway. Within this pathway it interacts with proteins like RAD51 to facilitate accurate DNA strand exchange. Another important pathway is the p53 signaling pathway where RECA1 influences the cellular response to DNA damage by working alongside p53. This collaboration ensures proper regulation of the cell cycle and activation of apoptosis if repair fails.
RECA1 plays a significant role in cancer and genetic disorders characterized by genomic instability. Mutations or altered expression of RECA1 can lead to defective DNA repair mechanisms contributing to unregulated cell growth and cancer particularly ovarian and breast cancers. In genetic disorders like Bloom syndrome where genomic instability is evident deficiencies in RECA1-related pathways often exacerbate the disease. RECA1's interaction with RAD51 and other DNA repair proteins makes it a potential target for therapeutic interventions.
