The islet cell often referred to as the pancreatic islet or islet of Langerhans is a cluster of hormone-producing cells found in the pancreas. These cells with a mass often in the micrometer range play an important role in glucose metabolism. The main types of cells within islets include alpha cells that secrete glucagon beta cells that produce insulin delta cells releasing somatostatin and PP cells that produce pancreatic polypeptide. Islet cells express various cell surface markers and these markers can help in identifying different cell types in research and diagnostics.
Biological function summary
The clusters of hormone-producing cells regulate blood glucose levels. The islet cells function as part of the endocrine system of the pancreas with beta cells being the most common and significant component. The interaction between different cell types within the islet facilitates the fine-tuning of insulin and glucagon secretion maintaining glucose homeostasis. Islet cells do not work alone; they interact with nerves and blood vessels forming a critical interface between hormone secretion and systemic circulation.
Pathways
Islet cell function integrates within the insulin signaling pathway and the glucagon signaling pathway. These pathways maintain glucose stability in the bloodstream. Insulin secretion involves cascades like the PI3K/Akt pathway which talks with insulin receptors on target tissues. Relation to glucagon occurs through the cAMP-dependent pathway influencing gluconeogenesis and glycogenolysis. Islet cells communicate with proteins such as GLUT2 and glucokinase important in glucose sensing and metabolism.
The dysfunction of islet cells is associated with diabetes mellitus types 1 and 2. In type 1 diabetes autoimmune destruction of beta cells impairs insulin production linking islet cells to immune proteins and autoantibodies. Type 2 diabetes involves insulin resistance which taxes beta-cell function over time. Other disorders like insulinomas tumors of the beta cells further illustrate the connection between islet cell biology and disease. Hence the islet cell holds a central role in understanding and treating metabolic disorders.
