The ASB8 protein or Ankyrin Repeat and SOCS Box Containing 8 measures approximately 27 kDa in molecular mass. It functions mechanically as part of the SOCS box family which usually interacts with elongin BC complexes. ASB8 contributes to the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway by binding to substrate proteins targeting them for degradation. It is expressed in various human tissues including skeletal muscle and heart indicating its importance in those areas.
Biological function summary
The ASB8 protein modulates different cellular processes by influencing protein turnover. Though ASB8 does not appear as a member of a larger complex it often interacts with elongin B and C to form an E3 ubiquitin ligase complex. This complex facilitates the tagging of proteins with ubiquitin marking them for degradation via the proteasome. By regulating such degradation ASB8 plays roles in maintaining cellular function and homeostasis.
Pathways
ASB8 engages in the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway a significant player in protein quality control and cellular regulation. It also links with signaling pathways like the JAK-STAT pathway impacting cellular responses to external signals. ASB8 is associated with other proteins such as SOCS family members and elongin BC which work together to regulate these pathways. These interactions highlight the regulatory potential of ASB8 in cell signaling and protein turnover.
ASB8 shows connections to muscle-related conditions and cardiac disorders. Mutations or dysregulation of ASB8 could be implicated in muscle atrophy or cardiomyopathies due to its role in muscle and heart tissue. ASB8's involvement in protein degradation and signaling pathways makes it likely to interact with other SOCS family proteins during these disease processes indicating a complex network of interactions influencing disease progression.
