INTU also known as Intu or Intu sg is an important component in developmental processes. Mechanical functions of this protein involve structural organization and modulation of cellular structures. INTU has a molecular weight of approximately 120 kDa. It displays expression predominantly in epithelial tissues where it plays a role in maintaining tissue morphology by regulating cellular architecture.
Biological function summary
INTU contributes to organizing cilia and managing cytoskeletal arrangement. INTU forms an integral part of the CPLANE complex which is essential for the proper functioning of a variety of cellular components. The activity of INTU in this complex directs ciliary assembly and positioning which are pivotal for signal transduction and cellular responses to environmental stimuli.
Pathways
INTU is an important player in the Hedgehog signaling pathway and planar cell polarity (PCP) pathway. Within the PCP pathway INTU interacts closely with the core PCP proteins which include Vangl2 and Fzd3 to regulate cell orientation and movement. In Hedgehog signaling INTU function is necessary for the transduction of signals that dictate developmental patterning and tissue differentiation across various organisms.
Mutations or malfunctions of INTU have been linked to ciliopathies such as Bardet-Biedl syndrome and neural tube defects. INTU-related anomalies disrupt normal ciliary function impacting ciliogenesis. The protein interacts with other ciliopathy-related proteins like BBS1 and OFD1 influencing ciliogenesis and related cellular processes leading to disease manifestations.
