LSM1 also known as Late Splicing Machinery 1 is a protein that plays a role in mRNA decapping and degradation. It is a core component of the 7-member LSM (Like Sm) complex. This protein is approximately 15 kDa in size and is mainly expressed in the cytoplasm. It functions by binding to the 3’ end of U6 snRNA and to the mRNA degradation machinery facilitating the removal of the 5’ cap structure from RNA molecules which is an essential step in the mRNA decay process.

The LSM1 protein is involved in RNA processing and degradation. It forms part of the LSM1-7 complex a ring-like structure critical for the stability and function of mRNA decay pathways. This protein participates in various cellular processes by interacting with other components involved in RNA metabolism.
