The EREG protein also known as epiregulin is part of the epidermal growth factor (EGF) family. It is a small polypeptide with a molecular weight of approximately 19 kDa. EREG is expressed in various tissues including the liver kidney and colon. It interacts with EGF receptors (EGFR) activating them through dimerization which then triggers downstream signaling processes.
Biological function summary
Epiregulin plays a significant role in cell proliferation migration and differentiation. It is not part of a larger complex but functions by binding to EGFR to exert its effects. Its interaction with EGFR influences numerous cellular processes important for tissue repair and development making EREG an important player in physiological and pathological conditions.
Pathways
Epiregulin is tied into the EGFR signaling pathway and the MAPK pathway. It works together with other growth factors like transforming growth factor-alpha (TGF-α) in these pathways. Through EGFR activation EREG influences cellular responses that are critical for growth and survival linking it to broader biological functions involving MAPK signaling cascades.
Epiregulin links to cancer progression and inflammatory diseases. In some cancers EREG overexpression correlates with aggressive tumor growth and poor prognosis. In inflammatory conditions it can modulate responses impacting diseases such as psoriasis by interacting with proteins like EGFR. Understanding EREG's roles provides insights into therapeutic strategies targeting EGFR-related pathways.
