RCBTB1 also known as RCC1 and BTB domain-containing protein 1 is a protein with a mass of approximately 74 kDa. Mechanically RCBTB1 functions as a suppressor in ubiquitin-proteasome systems part of the BTB-Kelch protein family implicated in protein degradation processes. Its expression occurs broadly with elevated levels noted in kidney liver and brain tissues indicating a role in various physiological contexts.
Biological function summary
RCBTB1 acts as a regulator in cell cycle and apoptosis pathways. It is an integral part of a complex that modulates transcriptional repression and ubiquitination. Researchers have highlighted its involvement in controlling cellular proliferation making it significant in maintaining cellular homeostasis. RCBTB1 also interacts with other proteins to influence gene expression patterns necessary for cell differentiation.
Pathways
RCBTB1 is notably engaged in the p53 signaling and WNT pathways. These pathways play essential roles in tumor suppression and cell fate decisions respectively. It associates with proteins such as MDM2 in the p53 pathway impacting cellular responses to DNA damage. Through the WNT signaling cascade RCBTB1 influences beta-catenin aiding in the transition between cellular proliferation and differentiation states.
Researchers have linked RCBTB1 to conditions such as cancer and retinitis pigmentosa. Alterations in its function can disrupt tumor suppression mechanisms given its connection to proteins like p53 and MDM2. Furthermore mutations in RCBTB1 have been associated with retinitis pigmentosa where its interaction with other proteins involved in photoreceptor cell maintenance becomes disrupted leading to progressive vision loss.
