The protein known as Growth arrest-specific protein 8 (GAS8) which is also referred to as GAS11 plays an important role in the mechanical stability and movement of intracellular structures. It has an approximate mass of 87 kDa. GAS8 is expressed in a range of tissues but shows high expression in ciliated structures such as in the respiratory tract and reproductive tissues. It operates mainly as a component of the microtubule organizing centers associating with various cytoskeletal elements.
Biological function summary
Within the framework of cell function GAS8 interacts with the axonemal dynein complex. This protein aids in regulating ciliary motion essential for proper cilia and flagella function. As a component of the axoneme a structural feature of cilia and flagella GAS8 contributes to microtubule network stability and arrangement. It also bridges interactions between microtubules and ciliary dynein thereby facilitating efficient movement.
