SERPINB13 also known as Headpin is a member of the serine protease inhibitor family. This protein is known for its role in inhibiting protease activities to protect tissues from excessive proteolytic damage. SERPINB13 has a molecular mass of approximately 44 kDa. Expression is most noted in the epithelial tissues of the tongue and esophagus but it also appears in other stratified squamous epithelia. The protein performs its function intracellularly modifying local protease environments.
Biological function summary
SERPINB13 regulates proteolytic processes by forming stable complexes with target proteases. It acts as an inhibitor to prevent unwanted protease activity keeping cellular proteolysis balanced. Although not part of any protease complexes directly SERPINB13 aligns functionally with other members of the serpin family that regulate protease activity across different tissues. This regulation is important especially in epithelial tissue where frequent renewal occurs.
