Znt6 also known as SLC30A6 is a zinc transporter protein involved in the homeostatic regulation of zinc ions. The protein has a molecular weight of approximately 45 kDa. Znt6 facilitates the transport of zinc ions across cellular membranes particularly into the Golgi apparatus and vesicles. This transporter is widely expressed in many tissues but its expression is notably high in the pancreas liver and brain.
Biological function summary
Znt6 plays a role in maintaining cellular zinc homeostasis. It is part of the cation diffusion facilitator (CDF) family involved in transporting metal ions within cells. Znt6 contributes to the sequestration of zinc into intracellular compartments which is important for zinc-dependent processes and enzyme functions.
