COX11 also known as cytochrome c oxidase assembly protein COX11 plays a role in the transfer of copper to cytochrome c oxidase (COX) during its assembly. This protein does not form part of the final COX complex. Instead COX11 aids in the initial copper insertion required for COX function. It possesses a molecular mass of approximately 28 kDa. COX11 is expressed in mitochondria where it contributes to these copper-dependent processes.
Biological function summary
COX11 impacts cytochrome c oxidase complex formation by participating in essential copper delivery. This protein serves a non-redundant role in stabilizing COX structure. COX also known as Complex IV is part of the mitochondrial respiratory chain responsible for electron transport and ATP production. COX11's actions ensure efficient COX assembly and maintain the electron transport chain's integrity.
Pathways
COX11 influences mitochondrial electron transport which is key for cellular respiration and energy metabolism. The protein assists in the formation of the electron transport chain. COX11 shares pathways with proteins like COX10 another copper insertase involved in COX assembly contributing to the COX complex formation and stabilization.
COX11 dysfunction associates with mitochondrial disorders such as Leigh syndrome a severe neurological condition. Defects in COX11 may lead to improper COX assembly which disrupts energy production in cells. COX11 abnormalities are connected to mutations affecting the COX complex linking it to other proteins involved in mitochondrial disorders such as COX15.
