The HL60 cell line named for its original derivation from human promyelocytic leukemia serves as a model for studying various aspects of blood cell biology and cancer research. HL60 cells are suspension cells and feature the unique ability to differentiate into several cell types such as granulocytes and macrophage-like cells depending on the stimuli. The cells express markers for early hematopoietic progenitors as well as proteins relevant to immune response. Mass-specific information for the HL60 line is not applicable as it refers to a cell line rather than a solitary protein or molecule.
Biological function summary
HL60 cells provide insights into modulations within the hematopoietic lineage. Scientists frequently use it to study the process of myeloid differentiation offering a stable platform for experiments involving gene expression and genetic modifications. The cell line is not part of a specific protein complex but plays an essential role when studying signal transduction pathways affecting myeloid cell differentiation. Researchers widely apply these cells to analyze transcription factors and cytokine interactions.
Pathways
The HL60 cell line facilitates exploration of the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathway and the role it plays in cell proliferation and differentiation. This pathway interacts with key proteins such as extracellular signal-regulated kinases (ERK) and c-Jun N-terminal kinases (JNK) influencing cellular outcomes by receiving and interpreting a multitude of metabolic and external signals. HL60 serves as a powerful tool for dissecting molecular regulation and signal integration within these pathways.
The HL60 cell line contributes significantly to the understanding of acute promyelocytic leukemia given its original derivation from this cancer type. Researchers employ these cells to test therapeutic interventions and understand drug resistance mechanisms related to leukemia. Moreover leading-edge studies utilize HL60 cells to explore the effects of new drugs targeting the modifications of the proteins involved in the disease such as PML-RARα the oncogenic driver in promyelocytic leukemia.
