GAS2L3 also known as GAS2-like protein 3 is a cytoskeletal-associated protein with a molecular mass of approximately 71 kDa. It often cooperates with actin and microtubules to stabilize the cell structure. Expression of GAS2L3 occurs in many tissues but it finds higher levels in proliferative cells particularly during mitosis. It carries unique domains that allow connections between the cytoskeleton components influencing cell shape and dynamics.
Biological function summary
GAS2L3 influences cell cycle progression and mitotic spindle organization acting as a part of the cell division machinery. This protein interacts with other cell division cycle proteins that ensure accurate chromosome segregation. Its association with the Ndc80 complex assists in the proper attachment of chromosomes to spindle microtubules. Failures in its function could affect spindle integrity which may lead to errors in cell division.
Pathways
GAS2L3 is significant in the regulation of the cell cycle and the actin cytoskeleton pathway. It connects with regulatory proteins such as Cyclin-dependent kinases which are key players in cell cycle advancement. GAS2L3's interaction with actin-binding proteins like cortactin shows its involvement in actin remodeling processes. These pathways highlight the complex network controlled by GAS2L3 to maintain orderly cell division and stability.
GAS2L3 dysfunction associates with cancerous pathologies and cell proliferation-related disorders. Changes in its normal activity can contribute to malignancies due to erroneous mitotic segregation and genome instability. GAS2L3 interacts with proteins such as p53 a well-known tumor suppressor indicating its potential role in tumorigenic processes when aberrations occur. Understanding GAS2L3’s contributions to these conditions reveals potential therapeutic targets for maintaining genomic fidelity.
