The SEC63 protein also known as NNF1 plays a critical role in the process of protein translocation across the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) membrane. It has a molecular mass of approximately 80 kDa. SEC63 is widely expressed in various tissues with notable expression in the ER where it functions as part of the translocon complex facilitating the proper insertion and folding of nascent polypeptides into the ER. This protein contains several distinct domains that contribute to its function in protein trafficking and biogenesis within the cell.
Biological function summary
SEC63 participates in cooperation with other components of the Sec61 translocon complex to assist in the translocation of polypeptides from the cytosol into the ER. It is essential for the proper assembly of membrane and secretory proteins directly impacting protein maturation. SEC63 interacts with proteins such as SEC62 and BIP which further stabilize the translocon and assist in the unfolding and refolding of polypeptides.
