Apolipoprotein O (ApoO) also known as mitochondrial apolipoprotein is a protein with a molecular mass of 23 kDa. It interacts with lipoproteins and plays a role in lipid metabolism. ApoO is highly expressed in human tissues including the liver heart and skeletal muscle. It associates with high-density lipoprotein (HDL) particles and has been detected in the mitochondria indicating a potential role in energy metabolism. Researchers have identified this protein as part of the apolipoprotein family which is involved in transporting lipids throughout the body.
Biological function summary
ApoO contributes to the regulation of lipid and energy homeostasis. It is not known to associate with a larger protein complex but it may influence mitochondrial functions due to its localization. ApoO shows potential roles in modulating oxidative stress and maintaining cellular energy through influencing lipid peroxidation and mitochondrial respiration. This suggests that ApoO might play a part in cellular protection against oxidative damage which is important for maintaining the health of cells particularly those with high energy demands like cardiac and muscle cells.
Pathways
ApoO affects the lipid metabolism and energy production pathways. This protein impacts the pathway involved in cholesterol efflux and mitochondrial function. ApoO's action overlaps with other apolipoproteins especially ApoA-I which is a critical component of HDL involved in cholesterol transport. By modulating these pathways ApoO may contribute to systemic lipid balance and influence HDL-related cholesterol pathways an essential process in maintaining cardiovascular health.
ApoO relates to cardiovascular diseases and mitochondrial dysfunction. Abnormalities in ApoO expression or function could contribute to dyslipidemia and heart disease as this protein impacts lipid metabolism and heart tissue energy levels. ApoA-I which partners with ApoO in the HDL complex also plays a significant role in cardiovascular health. Furthermore altered ApoO levels or function could link to mitochondrial disorders affecting mitochondrial energy production and oxidative stress leading to broader implications for diseases involving energy metabolism.
