Protein p39 also known as cyclin Y is a protein with a mass of approximately 39 kDa. It plays a role in cell cycle regulation. Expression of p39 occurs mainly in neural tissues where it participates in control of neuronal development and synaptic function. In addition p39 associates with cell membranes indicating its potential involvement in signal transduction pathways.
Biological function summary
P39 functions as a regulatory partner in cyclin-dependent kinase (CDK) complexes. These complexes are essential during various phases of the cell cycle including G1/S transition and mitosis. By forming complexes with CDK5 p39 modulates neuronal processes and affects aspects such as neuronal migration and axonal guidance. Moreover p39 interacts with other signaling molecules potentially influencing synaptic plasticity.
Pathways
Research shows p39's integration within the cell cycle and neuronal signaling pathways. In cell cycle regulation it interacts with proteins like CDK5 to influence cellular proliferation and differentiation. Additionally p39 plays a role in the Wnt signaling pathway where it could affect cellular growth and differentiation through interactions with key proteins like GSK-3β.
P39 associates with neurodegenerative conditions including Alzheimer’s disease. Abnormal p39 expression levels may disrupt normal neuronal function and homeostasis leading to disease progression. The protein's connection to CDK5 which is implicated in Alzheimer’s highlights the significance of p39 as a potential therapeutic target. Furthermore irregularities in Wnt signaling linked to p39 may contribute to the development of other neurological disorders suggesting important roles for p39 in maintaining neural integrity.
