LYRM4 also known as ISD11 is a mitochondrial protein with a mass of approximately 11 kDa. Mechanically LYRM4 plays a role in the regulation of mitochondrial metabolic activities specifically assisting in the maturation of the iron-sulfur (Fe-S) clusters important for respiratory function. LYRM4 is expressed in tissues with high mitochondrial activity such as muscle and liver. It forms a complex with the mitochondrial protein NFS1 enhancing its stability and functionality.
Biological function summary
LYRM4 associates with processes vital for cell metabolic homoeostasis. It forms part of the mitochondrial iron-sulfur cluster assembly machinery a complex essential for synthesizing Fe-S clusters. These clusters are required for numerous cellular functions including electron transport and enzyme activities. LYRM4 works closely with other components like ISCU and FXN helping to provide functional clusters to mitochondrial enzymes.
Pathways
LYRM4 functions within the context of mitochondrial iron-sulfur cluster biosynthesis and electron transport chain pathways. These pathways are critical for energy production and cellular metabolism. LYRM4 relates to proteins such as NFS1 and ISCU through these pathways facilitating the proper assembly and delivery of Fe-S clusters needed to maintain oxidative phosphorylation and cellular respiration.
LYRM4 mutations or dysfunctions relate to conditions such as mitochondrial myopathy and Friedreich's ataxia. These disorders involve impaired mitochondrial function and oxidative stress which stem from deficiencies in Fe-S cluster formation and function. The protein’s interactions with others like FXN implicated in Friedreich's ataxia highlight its importance in mitochondrial health and disease.
