SGPP1 also known as sphingosine-1-phosphate phosphatase 1 is an enzyme that dephosphorylates sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P) to sphingosine. This enzymatic activity helps regulate the levels of S1P a bioactive lipid involved in various cellular processes. The molecular mass of SGPP1 is approximately 50 kDa. SGPP1 is expressed in a variety of tissues including the liver brain and kidneys indicating its widespread role in the body.
Biological function summary
SGPP1 plays an important role in controlling the sphingolipid signaling pathway influencing cell growth survival and migration. It is not part of a larger complex but operates through interaction with S1P and its receptors. By removing phosphate groups from S1P SGPP1 reduces the signaling activity of this lipid mediator therefore influencing various biological responses including immune cell trafficking.
