Single-stranded DNA-binding protein 3 (SSBP3) functions mechanically by binding to single-stranded DNA stabilizing it and facilitating replication and repair processes. It is sometimes referred to as SSBP4 due to similarities with closely related proteins. SSBP3 has a molecular weight of around 33 kDa. It expresses in various tissues with higher expression levels in the liver kidney and brain. This protein plays a role in the regulation of DNA metabolic processes through its interaction with single-stranded DNA.
Biological function summary
SSBP3 participates in DNA replication recombination and repair mechanisms. The protein acts as a part of a multi-protein complex that includes the replication protein A (RPA) which is essential for maintaining genomic stability. This association helps in the recruitment of other proteins needed for proper DNA metabolic activities. By stabilizing single-stranded DNA SSBP3 contributes to efficient DNA processing ensuring accurate cellular function and integrity.
Pathways
Single-stranded DNA-binding protein 3 plays a role in the DNA damage repair pathway and the DNA replication pathway. It associates closely with proteins such as replication protein A (RPA) and the ataxia-telangiectasia mutated (ATM) protein which are significant in responding to DNA damage and ensuring proper DNA replication. Through these interactions SSBP3 influences DNA repair mechanisms and cell cycle progression protecting cells from genotoxic stress.
SSBP3 has links to neurodegenerative disorders and certain cancers. Alterations in the expression or function of SSBP3 may contribute to genomic instability seen in these conditions. Specifically its association with the ATM protein in the DNA repair pathway connects SSBP3 to ataxia-telangiectasia a disorder characterized by neurodegeneration and increased cancer risk. Research continues to explore how SSBP3's role in DNA stabilization and repair affects these disease processes.
