TRIM36 also known as RNF98 is a protein with an estimated molecular mass of approximately 75 kDa. It belongs to the tripartite motif (TRIM) family characterized by a RING finger domain one or two B-box domains and a coiled-coil region. The protein localizes mainly in the cytoplasm. Expression of TRIM36 occurs in various tissues with notable levels in the testes suggesting a role in reproductive biology.
Biological function summary
TRIM36 plays a role in ubiquitination processes by functioning as an E3 ubiquitin-protein ligase. This activity helps in targeting proteins for proteasomal degradation regulating their levels within the cell. TRIM36 shows involvement in the regulation of gametogenesis and early embryonic development. It does not appear to be a part of an extensive multi-protein complex but it interacts with other proteins to execute its functions.
Pathways
The functions of TRIM36 integrate within cell cycle regulation and signaling pathways. It interacts with MAPK signaling which is essential for cell proliferation and differentiation. TRIM36 also relates to the Wnt signaling pathway implicating it in processes like cell growth and embryonic development. The protein interacts with pathway members like APC and β-catenin indicating its integrative role in cellular communication.
TRIM36 has associations with developmental disorders and reproductive issues. Mutations or misregulation of TRIM36 can contribute to disorders like anencephaly which impacts neural tube development. In relation to reproductive health aberrant expression of TRIM36 might connect to infertility issues. The protein's interaction with β-catenin makes it relevant to research in these disease contexts providing a potential target for therapeutic strategies.
