Sample types:Tissue Lysate, Other biological fluids, Cell Lysate,
Assay type:Quantitative,
Assay Platform:Microplate

Product details:
Lysophosphatidylcholine Assay Kit (Colorimetric/Fluorometric) (ab273332) utilizes LPC-specific enzymes to generate an intermediate that then reacts with a probe, yielding a signal that can be quantified either colorimetrically or fluorometrically, and is proportional to the amount of LPC present in the sample.
When used as described, the assay is capable of detecting as little as 10 pmole of Lysophosphatidylcholine.
This product is manufactured by BioVision, an Abcam company and was previously called K735 Lysophosphatidylcholine Assay Kit (Colorimetric/Fluorometric). K735-100 is the same size as the 100 test size of ab273332.
The Safety Datasheet for this product has been updated for certain countries. Please check the current version in the Support and downloads section.

Lysophosphatidylcholine also called LPC serves as an important lipid mediator and is integral in cell membrane composition. LPC has a molecular mass that varies based on the length of its fatty acid chain. It usually serves as a hydrolyzed product of phosphatidylcholine and appears in plasma and tissues. This molecule expresses widely in the human body and its presence is essential for maintaining membrane functionality.
Biological function summary
LPC influences cell proliferation differentiation and apoptosis. It does not operate alone; LPC is often a component of lipoprotein complexes such as low-density lipoproteins. Being part of these complexes LPC can be involved in signaling processes linked to immune and inflammatory responses. Its role in the immune function enhances our understanding of how cellular communication occurs and how cells respond to various stimuli in their environment.
Pathways
Lysophosphatidylcholine participates significantly in the metabolic and inflammatory pathways. It activates the G-protein coupled receptors such as G2A and can mediate effects through the S1P signaling pathway. These pathways link LPC to interactions with proteins like PLA2 which further modulate inflammation and cellular metabolism processes. These biological pathways highlight the importance of LPC in keeping cellular processes balanced and responsive.
Lysophosphatidylcholine is implicated in atherosclerosis and neuroinflammation. LPC levels appear elevated in atherosclerotic lesions possibly due to its role in promoting macrophage recruitment and foam cell formation. Furthermore LPC associates with amyloid-beta peptides in neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s suggesting a connection with neuroinflammation. Understanding the interaction of LPC with proteins like ApoE gives insight into its pathogenic roles in these diseases.
