IgG2 also known as Immunoglobulin G2 is a subclass of the IgG antibodies within the immune system. It is a glycoprotein with a molecular mass typically around 150 kDa. As it is part of the IgG class IgG2 contributes to the body's defense mechanisms by binding to specific antigens. The expression of IgG2 occurs in plasma cells derived from B cells following antigen exposure. It circulates in the blood and extracellular fluid playing an important role in identifying and neutralizing pathogens such as bacteria and viruses.
Biological function summary
IgG2 plays an essential role in the immune response by activating the complement system therefore facilitating opsonization and eventual phagocytosis of pathogens. IgG2 forms part of the immunoglobulin family complex which mediates immune responses. It exhibits lower affinity for Fc receptors on phagocytic cells compared to other IgG subclasses. This characteristic affects its ability to mediate antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity. Despite this IgG2 remains key in recognizing polysaccharide antigens typically found on bacterial capsules which enhances immune response specificity.
Pathways
IgG2 acts within the adaptive immune system involving humoral immunity pathways. It participates in the classical complement activation pathway leading to the destruction of antigens through membrane attack complexes. IgG2 interacts with other immunoglobulin family members including IgG1 and IgG3 through these pathways offering a comprehensive immune response. The relationship with IgM is also notable as both IgG2 and IgM are involved in the first line of defense against polysaccharide antigens.
IgG2 levels and function relate to conditions such as recurrent bacterial infections and IgG subclass deficiencies. Patients with specific IgG2 deficiencies often suffer from increased susceptibility to infections particularly those caused by encapsulated bacteria like Streptococcus pneumoniae. Autoimmune diseases such as Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) may also involve dysfunctional IgG2 responses linking IgG2 with proteins like C1q in disease pathology. Researchers continue to study these connections to better understand immune function and improve therapeutic strategies.
