AKT1 and AKT2 also known as Protein Kinase B (PKB) family members are serine/threonine-specific kinases of about 56 kDa. They are expressed in many tissues with higher levels in muscle brain and heart. Mechanically AKT1 and AKT2 function in cellular signaling by being activated through phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K)-dependent processes leading to phosphorylation of downstream substrates critical for various cellular processes.
Biological function summary
AKT1 and AKT2 promote cell survival growth and metabolism. They do this by integrating signals from phosphatidylinositol (345)-trisphosphate (PIP3) and are often found as part of a larger signaling complex. These kinases are essential in moderating gene expression apoptosis and lipid metabolism. Their activity ensures a balance within the cell of life and death signals implicating them in processes like insulin response and nutrient availability.

PI3K/AKT pathway is significant where AKT1 and AKT2 mediate responses to growth factors and extracellular signals. In this pathway these kinases interact with proteins like mTOR and GSK3β influencing cell growth and protein synthesis.
