AIMP3 also known as p18 or eEF1A1 is a protein that plays an important role in cellular processes. It has a molecular mass of approximately 18 kDa. AIMP3 is expressed ubiquitously meaning it can be found in a variety of tissues throughout the body. As a part of the aminoacyl-tRNA synthetase (ARS) complex AIMP3 contributes to protein translation assisting in the assembly of necessary components for peptide chain formation.
Biological function summary
The role of AIMP3 extends beyond its contribution to protein synthesis. This protein participates in the macromolecular ARS complex which is essential for accurate and efficient translation of the genetic code into functional proteins. AIMP3 acts as a scaffold stabilizing the assembly and function of the ARS complex. Its involvement is critical for maintaining the fidelity of protein synthesis as errors in this process can lead to cellular dysfunction.
Pathways
AIMP3 engages in several key biological processes. It functions within the DNA damage response pathway where it interacts with proteins such as ATM and ATR to facilitate DNA repair mechanisms. Additionally AIMP3 is involved in the p53 signaling pathway where it contributes to the regulation of cell cycle and apoptosis. This interaction highlights the protein's role in maintaining genomic stability and preventing tumorigenesis.
AIMP3 has implications in cancer and neurodegenerative diseases. In cancer downregulation or mutations in AIMP3 can disrupt the DNA repair process leading to genomic instability and tumor development. The protein's interaction with p53 is particularly important as p53 mutations are common in a variety of cancers. Additionally AIMP3 has been associated with neurodegenerative disorders where improper protein synthesis may contribute to disease progression. Its relationship with these conditions highlights the broad impact of AIMP3 on human health.
