The NL63 nucleoprotein also known as N protein is a structural protein of the human coronavirus NL63 (HCoV-NL63). This protein plays a role in the viral replication cycle by binding to the viral RNA genome. It helps in packaging RNA into a ribonucleoprotein complex essential for virus assembly and infection. The NL63 nucleoprotein is approximately 60 kDa in size. It is expressed in the cytoplasm of infected cells where it interacts with other viral and host cell proteins.
Biological function summary
The NL63 nucleoprotein is essential for the stability of the viral RNA genome. It forms a helical ribonucleoprotein complex protecting viral RNA from host cell degradation mechanisms. This protein interacts with the viral polymerase complex to facilitate viral replication and transcription. It is part of a multi-protein complex that includes other viral structural proteins such as membrane and envelope proteins. Through these interactions the nucleoprotein coordinates viral assembly and release from host cells.
Pathways
The NL63 nucleoprotein interacts with pathways related to viral replication and translation processes in host cells. It is involved in the RNA synthesis pathway where it aids in the synthesis of viral RNA a critical step for viral propagation. The nucleoprotein relates to other viral proteins like the spike glycoprotein which plays a role in virus entry into host cells. Through these pathways the nucleoprotein regulates viral life cycle stages ensuring efficient replication and spread.
The NL63 nucleoprotein is linked to respiratory infections associated with human coronavirus NL63. This virus causes mild to severe respiratory symptoms including respiratory tract infections and croup particularly in children and the elderly. The nucleoprotein has connections to the spike protein in disease progression as the spike protein facilitates virus entry into host cells. Understanding the role of the nucleoprotein in disease mechanisms can assist in the development of antiviral strategies to combat HCoV-NL63 infections.
