The soluble IL2 Receptor beta also known as IL2Rβ or CD122 is a component of the interleukin-2 beta receptor complex. It has a molecular mass of approximately 55 kDa. IL2Rβ exists in both membrane-bound and soluble forms. This receptor is expressed on various immune cells including natural killer cells and some T lymphocytes. The soluble form of IL2Rβ can be detected in body fluids and often increases in response to immune activation.
Biological function summary
The soluble IL2 Receptor beta plays an important role in immune system regulation by modulating the activity of its ligand the IL2 protein. It forms part of the high-affinity IL-2 receptor complex typically with IL2Rα (CD25) and IL2Rγ (CD132). This complex facilitates the response to IL-2 signaling which is essential for the proliferation and differentiation of immune cells. The receptor is also involved in the generation and maintenance of regulatory T cells important for immune tolerance.
Pathways
The soluble IL2 Receptor beta is involved in the IL-2 signaling pathway which controls T cell growth by altering gene transcription through the JAK-STAT pathway. IL2Rβ interacts with proteins like STAT5 and JAK1 which mediate signal transduction to achieve biological effects. This pathway is critical for immune responses and lymphocyte development where IL2 and similar cytokines regulate immune cell functions.
The role of soluble IL2 Receptor beta is significant in conditions like leukemia and autoimmune diseases. Elevated levels of soluble IL2Rβ often associate with hematological malignancies indicating tumor burden and disease activity in leukemia. Furthermore it has connections to proteins such as TNF-alpha in autoimmune diseases where they might contribute to inflammation and immune dysregulation highlighting its potential as a therapeutic target or biomarker.
