CFP10 also known as ESAT-6-like protein 1 is a small secretory protein with a molecular weight of about 10.7 kDa. In Mycobacterium tuberculosis CFP10 forms a complex with ESAT-6 and both are important components of the ESX-1 secretion system. CFP10 is expressed primarily in pathogenic mycobacteria including Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Mycobacterium bovis. Its expression plays an important role in the infection process of these bacteria within host cells.
Biological function summary
Through interaction with ESAT-6 CFP10 is involved in the modulation of the host immune response. The CFP10-ESAT-6 complex contributes to the disruption of phagosomal membranes allowing the bacteria to escape into the cytosol of infected macrophages. This process helps the bacteria in evading the host immune system. The complex also influences the secretion of certain cytokines by the host impacting the immune regulatory mechanisms.
Pathways
The CFP10-ESAT-6 interaction plays a part in the ESX-1 secretion system pathway important for the virulence of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. This pathway is involved in modulating immune responses and enabling cellular invasion. The systems of ESX-1 are also connected to proteins like EspA and EspC whichs actively contribute to these mechanisms. Understanding the dynamics of these pathwaysrophic systems pathways is essential for developing tuberculosis treatments.
CFP10 has significant relevance to tuberculosis a disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Its role in pathogenicity of the bacterium makes it a target for diagnostic and therapeutic strategies. Furthermore CFP10 is associated with latent tuberculosis infection where it acts as a virulence factor interacting with proteins like ESAT-6 to modulate the host's immune response. Effective targeting of the CFP10-ESAT-6 complex holds potential for new interventions against tuberculosis.
