RPL39 also known as Ribosomal Protein L39 is a component of the ribosome the cell's protein synthesis machinery. It has a small molecular mass of around 6 kilodaltons. This protein is ubiquitously expressed in many tissues indicating its importance in cellular function. As part of the ribosomal subunits RPL39 plays a mechanical role in facilitating mRNA translation by ensuring the proper assembly and function of the ribosome.
Biological function summary
RPL39 contributes significantly to the protein synthesis process. It forms part of the large 60S subunit of the ribosome which requires it for effective translation and expansion of the polypeptide chain. In the ribosomal complex RPL39 supports the stability and proper function of the ribosome enabling proper decoding of genetic information. Its interaction with other ribosomal proteins ensures the continual and efficient production of proteins needed for basic cellular processes.
Pathways
The role of RPL39 is essential in the translation pathway a core part of the central dogma of molecular biology. Within this pathway RPL39 interacts with other ribosomal proteins such as RPL10 and RPL5 to facilitate the synthesis of proteins. Additionally it associates with the mTOR signaling pathway influencing cell growth and protein synthesis regulation and works closely with mTOR complex proteins like Raptor to modulate the rate of translation in response to various stimuli.
RPL39 has notable implications in cancer and embryonic development anomalies. Abnormal expression of RPL39 has been linked to the progression of certain cancers such as lung and breast cancers. This connection often involves interactions with c-Myc a protein whose dysregulation is common in several cancer types further intensifying tumor growth and progression. Additionally mutations in RPL39 have been associated with Diamond-Blackfan Anemia a disorder characterized by faulty ribosome function revealing its important role in maintaining proper blood cell production through its interaction with other ribosomal proteins.
