INT4 also known as Intracellular Neutral Thiol Enzyme 4 is a relatively small protein with a mass of around 28 kDa. This protein occurs mainly within intracellular compartments including the cytosol and certain organelles. It exhibits enzymatic activity involved in redox reactions making it important in cellular antioxidant defense. Although specific data on its exact tissue distribution is still under study INT4 tends to be active in tissues with high oxidative stress susceptibility.
Biological function summary
INT4 plays a significant role in cellular homeostasis and response to oxidative stress. This protein acts alone without forming large complexes. Its main function centers on maintaining the redox balance within cells which protects cellular components from oxidative damage. By modulating levels of reactive oxygen species INT4 contributes to the preservation of cellular integrity and function.
Pathways
INT4 is an essential component of the cellular redox-regulating pathways. It interacts closely with proteins involved in the glutathione system an important antioxidant pathway tasked with detoxifying reactive species and maintaining the cellular redox state. Additionally associations with the thioredoxin pathway suggest a wider role in protecting cells from oxidative stress by converting reactive oxygen and nitrogen species into less harmful forms.
Research establishes a connection between aberrant INT4 activity and Alzheimer's disease as well as Parkinson's disease. Both conditions involve oxidative stress and neurodegeneration suggesting that INT4's antioxidant function might influence disease progression. Changes in INT4 expression or function could potentially interact with other proteins like tau and alpha-synuclein which play roles in the pathology of these diseases. Understanding these interactions might offer insights into therapeutic strategies targeting oxidative damage in neurodegenerative diseases.
