GAPex 5 also known as GTPase-activating protein exchange factor 5 is a protein involved in cellular signaling. It has a mass of approximately 150 kDa and is widely expressed in various tissues. GAPex 5 regulates the activity of GTPases by facilitating the exchange of GDP for GTP which modulates signal transduction pathways. This protein plays an important role in maintaining cellular functions by influencing intracellular signaling processes.
Biological function summary
GAPex 5 interacts with small GTPases and forms part of larger protein complexes impacting different aspects of cell communication and function. It regulates cell growth differentiation and survival by modulating the activity of signaling molecules. GAPex 5's biological activity closely links to the control of cellular proliferation affecting processes such as cell cycle progression and apoptosis. By influencing these processes GAPex 5 strongly contributes to maintaining proper cellular homeostasis.
Pathways
GAPex 5 participates in the MAPK and PI3K/Akt signaling pathways essential for various cellular responses. In the MAPK pathway GAPex 5 interacts with Ras proteins which play an important role in transmitting extracellular signals to the cell nucleus. In the PI3K/Akt pathway its connection to PDK1 influences cell survival and growth. Through these pathways GAPex 5 helps regulate the balance between cell growth and death ensuring appropriate cellular responses to external stimuli.
Dysregulation of GAPex 5 links to cancer and neurodegenerative diseases. In cancer altered GAPex 5 activity correlates with aberrant cell proliferation by affecting Ras proteins. Similarly in neurodegenerative diseases changes in GAPex 5 impact signaling pathways associated with neuronal survival including interactions with proteins like Akt. Understanding the role of GAPex 5 in these disorders may offer insights into potential therapeutic strategies.
