CEP76 also known as Centrosomal protein 76 plays a role in the regulation of centriole duplication. It has an approximate molecular mass of 76 kDa. The protein is mainly expressed in the centrosome of eukaryotic cells. Centrosomes are important because they serve as the main microtubule-organizing centers which is important for cell division. CEP76 is also expressed in diverse human tissues and is critical in controlling the number of centrioles in dividing cells.
Biological function summary
CEP76 limits centriole duplication ensuring cells do not produce an excess number. It operates independently and is not a component of any larger protein complex known. But it interacts with other centrosomal proteins like CEP152 for its function. This interaction is important to maintain proper centriole numbers and is essential for genome stability during cell replication.
Pathways
CEP76 is involved in the p53 signaling pathway that controls cell cycle checkpoints and apoptosis. The activity of CEP76 ensures only one centriole cycle per cell cycle which aligns with the actions of related proteins like PLK4 a known regulator of centriole biogenesis.
