Kazrin also known as KAZ is a multifunctional protein involved in several cellular processes. It has an approximate mass of 55 kDa and is expressed in a variety of tissues including skin hair follicles and the cytoplasm of epithelial cells. Kazrin interacts with various proteins influencing cell adhesion proliferation and differentiation. Scientists also study its role in cytoskeletal organization as it binds to cytoskeletal proteins and contributes to cellular structure integrity.
Biological function summary
Kazrin plays a significant role in the maintenance of skin barrier function and epidermal differentiation. It is part of a complex that includes desmosomal and cytoskeletal proteins which together ensure proper cell-cell adhesion. These interactions assist in maintaining the mechanical stress response in tissues therefore contributing to tissue homeostasis. Kazrin influences epithelial morphogenesis and wound healing by modulating the dynamics and organization of actin filaments.
Pathways
Several biological pathways feature Kazrin due to its involvement in cellular adhesion and organization. Notably it participates in the keratinocyte differentiation pathway and cadherin signaling. Within these pathways it interacts with proteins such as desmoplakin and plakophilins which are essential for desmosome assembly and function. By regulating these interactions Kazrin supports the mechanical strength and resilience of cellular structures.
Dysregulation of Kazrin associates with certain skin-related conditions and cancers. Abnormal expression levels can impact epidermolysis bullosa a group of heritable skin blistering disorders by affecting the stability and function of desmosome components. Additionally Kazrin’s interaction with p53 a well-known tumor suppressor protein links it to various cancer progressions. Researchers continue to explore these connections to understand better Kazrin's role in disease mechanisms and potential therapeutic targets.
