DHX29 also known as ATP-dependent helicase DHX29 is a member of the DExH/D-box helicase family. It has an approximate molecular mass of 138 kDa. This protein acts as a helicase which unwinds RNA structures a critical step during translation initiation. DHX29 can be found in the cytoplasm of various human cells where it plays a part in cellular protein synthesis machinery. Its expression appears in diverse tissue types underlining its role in maintaining cellular function.
Biological function summary
DHX29 regulates efficient translation initiation by interacting with the ribosomal 40S subunit. It is critical for resolving the secondary structures within the 5' untranslated regions (UTRs) of mRNAs enabling ribosomes to properly locate the start codon. DHX29 does not necessarily form part of a larger complex but it directly interacts with the translation machinery including several initiation factors that modulate protein synthesis.

The activity of DHX29 links to the mTOR signaling pathway which regulates cell growth and metabolism in response to nutrient signals.
