SCGB3A1 also known as Secretoglobin Family 3A Member 1 or Uteroglobin-Related Protein 1 is a small secretory protein with a molecular mass of approximately 10 kDa. It is mainly expressed in non-ciliated epithelial cells of the respiratory tract and also found in the prostate uterus and mammary gland tissues. The protein belongs to the secretoglobin family which is a group of small cysteine-rich secretory proteins known for their involvement in complex biological processes.
Biological function summary
SCGB3A1 has important roles in modulating immune response and maintaining epithelial integrity. It acts as a secreted cytokine with some anti-inflammatory properties influencing the immune cell activity and reducing inflammation. Although SCGB3A1 does not form a known complex with other proteins its function in tissue regulation indicates a significant impact on the local immune environment making it a point of interest in respiratory and reproductive health.
Pathways
The function of SCGB3A1 reflects its involvement in the immune signaling pathway particularly in response to inflammatory cytokines. The protein is part of a network interacting with various immune regulatory pathways including the interleukin signaling pathway. SCGB3A1 achieves this through interactions with proteins such as IL-10 which plays an important role in balancing pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory responses.
SCGB3A1 has associations with conditions such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Its anti-inflammatory functions may impact the severity and progression of these respiratory illnesses. Research links SCGB3A1 to IL-13 in the context of asthma highlighting its part in modulating the immune response within the lung tissue. This connection makes SCGB3A1 a potential target for therapeutic exploration in respiratory diseases.
