The BAG5 protein also known as BCL2-associated athanogene 5 plays an important role as a co-chaperone in the regulation of protein folding and degradation. It has a molecular weight of approximately 48 kDa. BAG5 is expressed in various tissues but shows higher levels in neuronal tissues. The protein interacts with components of the cellular machinery to influence the fate of client proteins affecting their stability and function. Its structural regions facilitate binding to both target proteins and other chaperones modulating chaperone activity.

BAG5 influences processes related to cell survival and apoptosis regulation. It is involved in forming complexes with heat shock proteins particularly Hsp70 and Hsp90 affecting their chaperone activity.
