Product Description
uPA is a serine protease. It is produced as a single-chain protein containing serine protease domain, Kringle domain, and growth factor domain. It is proteolyticaly cleaved between Lys158 and Ile159; the two resulting chains are kept together as a dimer by a disulfide bond. The primary function of uPA is to convert plasminogen into plasmin by specific cleavage of an Arg-Val bond in plasminogen. uPA is also involved in the degradation of the extracellular matrix and possibly tumor cell migration and proliferation. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for uPA; a specific polymorphism of uPA may be associated with late-onset Alzheimer's disease and also with decreased affinity for fibrin-binding.
