Desmoglein 2 (DSG2) is a calcium-binding adhesion molecule that is highly expressed in epithelial cells and cardiomyocytes in vertebrates. DSG2 mainly locates to the intracellular adhesive junction called desmosome, which is a structure that functions in cell-to-cell adhesion. Clinically, mutations in DSG2 are mostly linked to cardiomyopathy. A recent GWAS study has shown that DSG2 is 1 of the 20 genetic risk factors that are associated with Alzheimer's disease.
