Background Mx2 (MxB) is a dynamin-like GTPase that is highly upregulated by IFN-α and IFN-β and upregulated to a lesser extent by IFN-γ (1). Mx2 functions as an HIV restriction factor by blocking infection at the late post-entry step through prevention of nuclear accumulation and chromosomal integration (2). HIV restriction by Mx2 is dictated through the capsid region of the viral Gag protein (2).
