GPX5 protects cells and enzymes from oxidative damage, by catalyzing the reduction of hydrogen peroxide, lipid peroxides and organic hydroperoxide, by glutathione. Catalytic the reaction: 2 glutathione + H2O2 = glutathione disulfide + 2 H2O. GPX5 constitute a glutathionine peroxidase-like protective system against peroxide damage in sperm membrane lipids. GPX5 has a calculated molecular mass of 25 kDa and apparent molecular mass of 22-28 kDa due to the cleavage of signal peptide and glycosylation.
