Intelectins (intestinal lectins) are highly conserved across chordate evolution and have been implicated in various human diseases, including Crohn's disease (CD). The human genome encodes two intelectin genes, intelectin-1 (ITLN1) and intelectin-2 (ITLN2). It is reproted that human ITLN2 is expressed in Paneth cells, where it localizes to secretory granules, and establish that ITLN2 is a highly abundant multimeric protein secreted into the lumen of the small intestine (PMID: 35182405). The calculated molecular weight of ITLN2 is 36 kDa.
