The transporter is composed of a predicted 340-amino acid, 7-transmembrane domain protein (Ostα) and a putative 128-amino acid, single-transmembrane domain polypeptide (Ostβ). Ostα-Ostβ transports bile acids by a facilitated diffusion mechanism; therefore, Ostα-Ostβ can mediate cellular efflux or uptake depending on the substrate's electrochemical gradient. It's reported that Ostα-Ostβ is not only essential for bile acid, but also vital for sterol disposition and enterohepatic circulation(PMID: 21691099).
