This protein is widely expressed in various human tissues, including the placenta, intestine, brain, liver, lung, kidney, cornea, retina, and heart. It uses energy from the transmembrane sodium ion gradient and membrane potential to actively transport these vitamins into cells. Due to different glycosylation modifications, SLC5A6 may exhibit two bands at ~55 kDa and ~69 kDa.
