ACOT1 also known as Acyl-CoA thioesterase 1 is an enzyme involved in the hydrolysis of acyl-CoA to free fatty acid and CoA. It has a molecular mass of approximately 46 kDa. ACOT1 expresses mainly in liver kidney and heart tissues where it regulates levels of acyl-CoA an important molecule in various metabolic processes. Its activity facilitates the balance between thioesterase and transferase reactions impacting fatty acid metabolism.
Biological function summary
ACOT1 plays a role in lipid metabolism by managing the acyl-CoA pool. This enzyme helps in modulating the intracellular concentration of acyl-CoA and free fatty acids which are important for energy production and storage. It does not integrate into a larger protein complex instead functioning independently within cells.
