ATP11A also known as AtpIH is a phospholipid-transporting ATPase located on the plasma membrane important for maintaining phospholipid asymmetry. Its approximate molecular weight is 130 kDa. This enzyme primarily expresses in tissues such as the brain testis and heart highlighting its important functions in these areas. ATP11A works in the flipping of aminophospholipids from the outer to the inner leaflet of cellular membranes playing an important role in maintaining membrane stability and function.
Biological function summary
ATP11A and its activity contribute to cellular processes including vesicle formation and transport across the membrane. It often functions as a part of a larger protein complex which facilitates its phospholipid translocating action. By coordinating with specific binding partners ATP11A supports cellular morphology and communication ultimately assisting in developmental and functional processes in several tissues.
Pathways
ATP11A participates significantly in the phospholipid transport pathway and cellular homeostasis. It closely interacts with CDC50 proteins such as CDC50A which act as regulatory subunits assisting in the flipping activity. On a broader scale ATP11A influences membrane trafficking pathways and the asymmetry of phospholipids linking it to key cellular events like apoptosis and immune response. These interactions enhance the precision and efficiency of its role in cellular function.
Disrupted ATP11A function associates with immune disorders and neurological conditions. Aberrations in its normal activity can lead to immune system dysfunctions and specific types of neuropathies. The dysregulation of ATP11A also links it to Alzheimer's disease where improper membrane phospholipid distribution might influence neurodegenerative processes. Understanding the interaction between ATP11A and related proteins like APP (amyloid precursor protein) aids in clarifying its role in these disorders.
