ELOVL7 also known as elongation of very-long-chain fatty acids protein 7 plays a mechanical role in the elongation of very-long-chain fatty acids (VLCFAs). This protein catalyzes the first and rate-limiting step in fatty acid elongation adding two carbon units to acyl-CoAs. ELOVL7 has a molecular mass of approximately 30.9 kDa. The expression of ELOVL7 is observed in various human tissues with higher levels in the liver brain and testes suggesting its significance in these areas.
Biological function summary
ELOVL7 contributes to the synthesis of saturated and unsaturated VLCFAs essential for membrane lipid composition and energy storage. It acts independently and does not form part of larger enzymatic complexes. The function of ELOVL7 aids in maintaining the integrity and functionality of cellular membranes influencing processes like cell signaling and membrane fluidity.
Pathways
ELOVL7 plays a significant role in the metabolism of lipids and fatty acids. This protein is an important component of the fatty acid elongation pathway. ELOVL7 interacts with enzymes like fatty acid synthase (FASN) within this pathway ensuring coordination in the synthesis and regulation of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids. This interlinked network demonstrates the protein's importance in maintaining lipid homeostasis.
Alterations in ELOVL7 function may contribute to conditions such as prostate cancer and neurodegenerative diseases. In prostate cancer dysregulated expression of ELOVL7 can affect lipid metabolism impacting cancer cell growth and survival. In neurodegenerative diseases ELOVL7 dysfunction affects membrane lipids critical for neuronal function and health. In these contexts ELOVL7's interaction with proteins like FASN influences disease progression and offers potential targets for therapeutic interventions.
