Product details:
Abcam's anti-Mumps virus IgM Human
in vitro
ELISA (Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay) kit is designed for the accurate qualitative measurement of IgM class antibodies against Mumps virus in Human serum and plasma.
A 96-well plate has been precoated with Mumps virus antigens to bind cognate antibodies. Controls or test samples are added to the wells and incubated. Following washing, a horseradish peroxidase (HRP) labelled anti-Human IgM conjugate is added to the wells, which binds to the immobilized Mumps virus-specific antibodies. TMB is then catalyzed by the HRP to produce a blue color product that changes to yellow after adding an acidic stop solution. The density of yellow coloration is directly proportional to the amount of Mumps virus IgM sample captured in plate.

The Mumps Virus IgM is an immunoglobulin produced by the adaptive immune system in response to mumps virus infection. Immunoglobulin M (IgM) antibodies are large proteins approximately 970 kDa and are the first antibodies produced by the body upon infection. Mumps Virus IgM can be detected in the serum of infected individuals providing an important marker for mumps infection. Mumps IgM is expressed predominantly in serological fluids and it usually appears a few days after symptoms onset reaching peak levels soon after.
Biological function summary
The production of IgM antibodies plays an essential role in the host's defense against the mumps virus. These antibodies do not function as part of a complex but work independently to neutralize the virus. By binding to the viral particles Mumps Virus IgM can prevent the virus from entering the host cells promoting the clearance of viral particles from the bloodstream. This immune response assists in containing the spread of the infection within the host.
Pathways
Mumps Virus IgM activity intersects with both the humoral immune response and cytokine signaling pathways. In the humoral immune response the presence of IgM initiates a cascade that involves other antibody classes such as IgG which is important for long-term immunity. IgM also works in conjunction with various cytokines enhancing the immune response to ensure efficient virus clearance. This interaction emphasizes its role in the broader immune system including its influence on the activity of B cells and macrophages.
The presence of Mumps Virus IgM serves as a diagnostic marker for mumps an infectious disease characterized by swollen salivary glands and potential complications such as meningitis. Another related condition is orchitis inflammation of the testes which can occur in post-pubertal males infected with the mumps virus. While Mumps Virus IgM does not have direct connections to specific proteins in these disorders its detection is important for the diagnosis and management of these conditions helping to trigger further immune system proteins like IgG to confer lasting immunity.
