RTR also known as Retinoid Receptor is a transcription factor involved in regulating gene expression. Its molecular weight is approximately 55 kDa. RTR is expressed in various tissues with high expression levels found in liver brain and kidney. It binds to specific DNA sequences to control the transcription of genes related to cell differentiation and lipid metabolism. RTR belongs to the nuclear receptor superfamily indicating its role in responding to metabolic cues.
Biological function summary
RTR functions as an integral part of gene regulation networks by forming heterodimers with other nuclear receptors such as RXR (retinoid X receptor). This dimerization is necessary for binding to response elements in the DNA which modulates the transcription of target genes. The RTR-RXR complex plays an important role in cellular processes including development homeostasis and metabolism regulation impacting how cells respond to retinoic acid and other ligands.
Pathways
RTR plays significant roles in the retinoic acid signaling and lipid metabolism pathways. In the retinoic acid signaling pathway RTR regulates gene expression that is critical for embryonic development and cell differentiation. Through its interaction with other proteins like RXR RTR impacts the initiation of transcription required for metabolic processes. In the lipid metabolism pathway RTR influences genes responsible for lipid uptake and storage linking its function to energy homeostasis.
RTR has significant associations with cancer and metabolic syndromes. Abnormal RTR function can disrupt gene regulation contributing to tumor growth and progression including breast and prostate cancers. In metabolic disorders RTR dysfunction correlates with insulin resistance and obesity. RTR's interaction with RXR becomes dysregulated in these conditions impacting signaling pathways and contributing to disease development.
